Tour Itinerary
-
Departing your hotel, we’ll start our journey heading northwest towards the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. This was the first national park established in Scotland and we’ll take our first stop of the tour within its boundaries.
From here, we’ll move deeper into the Western Highlands, travelling over the impressive highland expanse known as Rannoch Moor, one of the last remaining wildernesses in Europe. Then, we’ll stop in Glencoe – a place world-renowned for its beauty and history.
Take in the stunning landscapes, including the Three Sisters (the three mountains that sit together) and Loch Achtriochtan, and learn about the infamous massacre of the MacDonalds at the hands of Clan Campbell that happened here in 1692.
From Glencoe our next stop will be the historic town of Fort William. The town is the second largest settlement in the Highlands, nestled at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles. We’ll stop here for lunch, where you’ll find plenty of locally run cafes and restaurants to choose from.
Leaving Fort William, we’ll begin our journey northwards towards Inverness through The Great Glen. Formed millions of years ago as a result of a geological fault, the glen features three massive freshwater lochs, including the world-famous Loch Ness. All of these lochs are interconnected by the Caledonian Canal, which was constructed in the beginning of the 19th century to provide a navigable route for boats, and links the east and west coasts of Scotland.
Travelling along this towering natural corridor, we’ll arrive at our penultimate stop, Fort Augustus. Sharing a similar history to Fort William, this is where you’ll meet Loch Ness, and possibly its famous inhabitant! We’ll take a short break here to allow you to explore the quaint village and be on the lookout for Nessie!
Once you’ve finished searching for monsters, we’ll travel along Loch Ness towards our final stop of the day, Inverness. Carrying the title of ‘The Highland Capital’, Inverness is the only city in the Highlands. We’ll arrive in the early evening, dropping you at your accommodation to get checked in. -
We’ll depart Inverness first thing and make our way towards the ancient bronze age site of Clava Cairns – known for its well-preserved and distinctive collection of burial cairns (a human-made pile of stones) and standing stones, dating back 4000 years. Some of the features at Clava Cairns are aligned with astronomical events, suggesting that the site may have had a ceremonial or ritualistic purpose.
From Clava, we’ll make the short drive towards Culloden Battlefield and Visitors Centre (£). Witness the location of one of the most pivotal moments in Scottish history – the battle of Culloden, which took place here in 1746. You can walk the battlefield, view the clan graves and take in this haunting windswept moor that witnessed the climax of the Jacobite Rising. You’ll find a world class visitor exhibition centre here (£), that gives you a truly immersive experience of what it was like on the day of battle.
After Clava and Culloden, we’ll make our way south towards Scotland’s second and largest national park, The Cairngorms. Travelling towards the park’s principal settlement, Aviemore, we’ll stop for lunch. Here there are many locally run cafes and eateries for you to choose from.
Continuing the journey south, we’ll make our way into the Perthshire region and to our next stop, Dunkeld. Situated on the banks of the River Tay, Dunkeld is known for its picturesque setting, historic architecture, and cultural significance. The town features charming historic buildings known as ‘The Little Houses.’ These houses, with their white facades and distinctive architecture, contribute to Dunkeld's unique character. We’ll stop for a tea/coffee break and allow you to explore the town further.
The final stop on of the day is The Hermitage, a picturesque, wooded area close to Dunkeld. Managed by the National Trust for Scotland, this area is known for its scenic beauty and walking trails. A highlight of The Hermitage is Ossian’s Hall of Mirrors, an elaborate viewing platform for the Black Linn Falls waterfalls. You’ll also get to walk amongst some of the tallest Douglas fir trees in Scotland.
Once you’ve taken in the magic of The Hermitage, we’ll travel south to your hotel and say goodbye. -
Clothing
Glasgow comedian and actor Sir Billy Connolly famously said of Scotland that “there’s no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes”.
It’s true that no matter what the season, the weather in Scotland can be “changeable”. We suggest that you bring suitable clothing for all conditions, including a waterproof jacket and plenty of layers, particularly in the winter months.
Ensure you bring shoes that are suitable for short walks on rough or uneven terrain and, if you plan to do any hiking, we recommend appropriate boots.
The infamous Scottish midge
In the spring/summer months, we highly recommend you pack insect repellent to keep midges away, especially in the highlands. While bites aren’t painful at the time, they can become itchy and uncomfortable afterwards.
