Planning a Trip to Scotland? Here's What You Need to Know About the UK ETA

If you're visiting Scotland from abroad, there's an important travel update you should know about. The UK Government has introduced a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for many international visitors. Whether you’re joining us for a day tour or a longer adventure, understanding the ETA is essential before you travel.

What is the UK ETA?

The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a new requirement for travellers who do not currently need a visa to visit the UK. If you're coming for tourism, business, or even just passing through the UK on your way elsewhere, you may now need to apply for an ETA before travelling.

This system allows the UK to screen visitors in advance and is part of a wider move to digitise and secure the UK border.

Who Needs to Apply for an ETA?

If you're a national of a visa-exempt country, you may now need an ETA to enter the UK. This includes many of our international guests from countries such as:

  • The United States

  • Canada

  • Australia

  • New Zealand

  • Japan

  • South Korea

  • Singapore

  • And most EU member states

The ETA requirement is being rolled out in stages, so not all nationalities are required to apply just yet. We recommend checking the UK Government website to confirm when your nationality becomes eligible.

Who does not need an ETA?

You do not need an ETA if:

  • You already have a valid UK visa

  • You have permission to live, work or study in the UK (including settled or pre-settled status, or right of abode)

  • You are a British or Irish citizen

  • You are travelling on a valid British Overseas Territories citizen passport

  • You are a British National (Overseas) passport holder

  • You live in Ireland and are entering from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man

  • You are exempt from immigration control or from needing permission to enter (e.g. some seafarers, crew members, or approved school groups)

Dual citizens

If you hold both British or Irish citizenship and another nationality, you do not need an ETA. Simply travel using your valid British or Irish passport, or a passport that contains a certificate of entitlement.

How Much Does It Cost?

The UK ETA costs £16 per person, payable at the time of application. Once granted, it is valid for multiple visits over two years, or until your passport expires – whichever comes first.

When Should You Apply?

You should apply well in advance of your travel date. Most applications are processed within 3 working days, but it’s wise to allow more time in case additional checks are needed.

You must have an approved ETA before boarding your flight, ferry, or train to the UK. Without it, your travel provider may refuse you boarding.

How to Apply for a UK ETA

Applying is straightforward:

  1. Visit the official UK Government site: gov.uk/eta

  2. Apply online or through the UK ETA mobile app

  3. Upload a recent photo, provide your biometric passport details, and pay the £16 fee

  4. Wait for email confirmation – most decisions arrive within 72 hours

Once approved, your ETA is digitally linked to your passport, so there’s no need to print anything.

Beware of ETA Scams

As with any new travel requirement, some unofficial websites are already attempting to mislead travellers. These sites often charge higher fees, offer no additional benefits, and may not be secure.

To protect yourself:

  • Only apply through the official UK Government website: gov.uk/eta

  • Do not pay more than £16

  • Avoid sites with .com addresses or those not ending in .gov.uk – these are not official

If you’re ever in doubt, double-check the URL before entering any personal or payment information.
